Some questions they asked us:

Business Impact Award

What motivated you to start your business? Why are you passionate about what you do?

Starting a coffee roastery in a city is one thing. Starting a coffee roastery in an unincorporated community of 400 people (in summer time), at the end of a 100 km (one way) road, is another story. Many thought it impossible for such an idea to be worthwhile. Having been entrepreneurs in the Hotel, Cafe and Restaurant business for many years, we wanted to try a new challenge and delved into coffee roasting in 2013, when we started roasting coffee for a coffee shop we operated in our small community. Upon immediately falling in love with the complex world that is specialty coffee roasting, we took a leap of faith, closed the coffee shop and moved the roastery onto our 4 acres property, off the grid, 12km out of town. Because our property is off the grid and surrounded by nature, we wanted to roast sustainably, in harmony with our surroundings. We thus installed enough solar power to operate the entire roastery, and had a custom wood-fired roaster built for us in Italy. We've never looked back. Starting a business in a town of 400 people, at the end of a 100km one way road was not easy, and it took a leap of faith. It's thanks to the incredible and overwhelming support of our little town and now provincial and national community, that we continue to grow. We continue to strive to always improve, and bring you the best quality organic coffees, all the while continuing to ensure our social and environmental ethics and standards remain in place.

Why do you deserve to win the Business Impact award?

With our social and environmental ethos, we are, and have been a 'roastery of tomorrow'. If we win the Small Business BC award this year, we will apply for Fair-trade certification, to take things one step farther. We will continue to strive to always bring you the best quality organic coffees, all the while looking for ways to ensure we continue to improve our social and environmental impact.
